“Flags of Our Fathers”

The photograph of the flag being raised at Iwo Jima impacted the world especially the United States, so how else has photography impacted the world? Photographs can change a person or nations view on different things. How did the picture of the flag raised at Iwo Jima effect America and what other effects can photography have on the world.

The movie in my opinion did a great job on the way the photography can impact the world. In “Flags of Our Fathers” we see how the picture of the flag on Iwo Jima effected the world. Photography has always had an impact on our world. Whether it is a moving and hopeful picture like we see in the movie and in reality. We also are exposed to photography every day. Those pictures could be of a scientific anomaly or who the front cover photo of who the world decides is the most interesting person for that issue. Photography in any form can impact the world and I think “Flags of Our Fathers” did a great job at portraying that.

In America the photo had a huge impact on the lives of the soldiers and the nation. The soldiers were pulled from duty to be shown around the nation to encourage people to help the war effort. The U.S saw hope in that picture. The war had already lasted years, and the people of America were sick of it. The picture brought hope that the U.S was on track to win the war and finally end the fighting. Support for the war grew, more people started buying bonds, the patriotism was in full swing, and the country was united again. All because of a picture. This picture alone helped win the war.

Although the picture had a very positive impact on the people of America it did not have the same impact on the soldiers in the picture. The men who were still alive were pulled from duty to advertise war bonds. These men were seen as heroes, even though they did not see themselves as heroes. Since the picture was not of the original flag raised, people were lied to as to who was in the picture originally. This had a negative impact on the families of the passed soldiers. In the movie we see how the thought of their son being in the picture brought great comfort to the families when they were not in the picture. So, although the photograph brought hope and unity to the U.S, the people involved or who were thought to be involved were negatively impacted by all the publicity.

Overall photography is an important part of our lives and the impact a photo can have on the world is displayed very well in the film “Flags of Our Fathers” Photography is one of the most unifying art forms in the world.
